Already cutting his teeth in the rap game, Bigg said, he honed his skills while in the penitentiary. After an apparently ineffective stint in boot camp, Bigg was arrested again in 1994 on charges of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, the result, he said, of a shootout and car chase that ended in a crash. He's notorious in the local music industry for his refusal to sign a deal unless he controls the rights to the music.

Unlike his co-stars, Bigg has yet to crack the mainstream. Many of the other rappers in the film - Mos Def, Obie Trice and Ice Cube, among others - enjoy broad recognition and the backing of major music labels. The film, produced by Quincy Jones III, son of famed musician Quincy Jones Jr., is due out this spring, though the format of its release has yet to be announced. Bigg's brush with death is one of several vignettes featured in the upcoming film 'Number One with a Bullet,' a documentary exploring the nexus of gun violence and hip-hop.
